Like Qatar 2022, the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia is expected to move to winter. Here's why — and what it means for the football calendar.
When will the 2034 World Cup be played? FIFA hasn't confirmed the dates yet — but all signs point to a winter tournament, just like Qatar 2022.
The heat problem
Saudi summers regularly exceed 45°C. Playing a World Cup in June–July, as is traditional, would be dangerous for players and fans alike. That makes a November–December 2034 window the overwhelming likelihood.
The Qatar precedent
Qatar 2022 was the first winter World Cup, shifting the global club calendar for a season. 2034 is expected to follow the same model, with domestic leagues pausing mid-season.
What's confirmed
So far: Saudi Arabia as hosts, 48 teams, 104 matches, and five host cities. The exact dates, final schedule and draw will be confirmed by FIFA in the years ahead.
