Group stage FAQ

How do teams qualify from the group stage?

The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four. The top two teams in every group automatically advance, joined by the eight best third-placed teams — giving 32 teams in the knockout Round of 32.

What is the Round of 32?

New for 2026, the Round of 32 is the first knockout round. The 32 qualifying teams play single-elimination matches that lead into the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.

How are the group tables ranked?

Teams are ranked first by points (three for a win, one for a draw). If level, goal difference, goals scored and head-to-head results are used to separate them.
